The holy preparations in which Sacristans are entrusted are the basic framework for the beautiful and sacred objects that are used and carried out before, during, and after the Mass. It’s a serious job that one must undertake with care and wisdom.
Many of the Sacristan’s duties are related to taking care of the Sacristy (hence the name Sacristan) and the sacred items in the Sacristy. This is the secure area of the church which serves as a holding room for the sacred items used in the Holy Mass. Our Sacristans prepare the church for Mass and often work in groups.
The main duties include:
- Clean & fill holy water fonts
- Iron & change altar cloths according to the liturgical calendar
- change candles on the altar
- prepare & clean candle lighters
- polish & clean candlesticks, tabernacle and sacred vessels
- Prepare sacred oil & clean containers
For Sunday Mass (and some other Masses) we work alone to prepare the bread & wine, vessels, liturgical books and prepare the Altar space. The Sacristan is at the church one hour before Holy Mass.
It is not necessary for all members to participate in all duties.
Prerequisite: Should have some knowledge about the Sacred Vessels.
Time Commitment: Averages 1-2 hours per week with extra time at Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter.
