SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST (CORPUS CHRISTI)
Exodus 24: 3 - 8
Hebrews 9: 11 - 15
Mark 14: 12 - 16, 22 - 26
|
Today we celebrate Corpus Christi — the Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus’ Body and Blood was sacrificed for us on Calvary, but before that excruciating event, He humbly bound Himself to human hands in the Eucharist. As St. Thomas Aquinas expresses, “In this sacrament sins are purged away, virtues are increased, the soul satiated with an abundance of every spiritual gift. No other sacrament is so beneficial.” Our Gospel today recounts the Last Supper. As Jesus ate the Passover meal with His apostles, He broke bread, telling them, “This is my Body,” and again, poured wine, saying, “This is my Blood… which will be shed for many.” In this moment, Jesus sacrificially gave us Himself in the Eucharist by foreshadowing His passion, death and resurrection. Out of total love, Jesus holds nothing back from us. He gives us His entire self. We must ask ourselves; do we understand Who we consume at every Mass? It is our Precious Redeemer. As life becomes busy and our minds are filled with the countless things we must get done each day, we often forget to acknowledge our Savior at Mass; or to spend time with Him throughout our week; or to accept all the graces He wishes to bestow on us as we receive Him. So let us stop and recognize the real presence of our Savior. Jesus gave us the perfect and loving Gift of Himself so that we might be nourished, strengthened and more fully united to Him as we journey to eternal life. Let us strive to intentionally honour and reverence Him at every Mass; strive to fully partake in each Eucharistic meal; and let us find time to visit our Savior in the Tabernacle. Update on Parish Renewal!
You are called. You matter. You Belong. There was an amazing turnout of 150 parishioners at the Parish Renewal Gathering May 4th!
To see pictures and read about it, see our article in Faithfully here.
We heard the following feedback from those who attended the Renewal Gathering: - You enjoyed the Gathering and would like to see more events like it.
- You valued praying with scripture/Lectio Divina as a group and sharing your faith.
- You appreciated meeting parishioners you didn’t know before.
- All three pillars of the renewal resonated with you, in particular Strengthening Family Life, as you expressed your desire to form your children in the faith and your concern for family members that have fallen away.
- You long for programs for youth and young adults to learn, grow and keep their faith.
- You would like to receive more formation on the Catholic faith, the Mass, Bible Studies and how to evangelize.
Thank you for sharing your hope for the renewal with us! The Parish Renewal Team will provide a more detailed feedback report in the near future.
The next step in the Diocesan Pastoral Renewal is a PARISH SURVEY starting JUNE 1st!
Your voice matters!
You are invited to participate in an ONLINE survey at the end of Mass during the weekend of June 1 & 2. Please stay tuned for more details about the survey through upcoming announcements in the bulletin.

Our parish needs four women sponsors to accompany those who are on the journey to become Catholic, through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Sponsors offer companionship and prayer that supports the Catechumen or Candidate through the RCIA process. You do not need to be a teacher of the faith, just a fully initiated and practicing Catholic. Many sponsors have said this role has helped them grow in their own faith. The time commitment is to attend some of the weekly Wednesday evening catechesis sessions and ultimately the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.

Special Note: The CWL ladies would like to thank everyone for their contributions to the Hike for Life which took place Saturday, May 11. We appreciate those who joined us to be a public witness to LIFE because, “Every human life is precious and valuable from conception until natural death.”
Many parishioners donated their time, talent and treasure to this worthy cause. Donations are still being accepted at: Calgaryprolife.com. Look for team ”St Albert the Great”
The St. Albert the Great CWL has partnered with Canadian Blood Services to promote blood donation within our community. Join our Partners for Life team (STAL0116763).
NOTE:
The SATG Catholic Women’s League started a 2024 campaign in conjunction with Canadian Blood Services to increase awareness for the need of blood donors. As part of this campaign, we had Canadian Blood Services complete a site inspection in the hopes St. Albert the Great Parish could become a donation site. Unfortunately, the church elevator and ramp do not accommodate the movement of their equipment. Despite us not being able to be a donation site, the CWL continues to encourage all eligible parishioners, their families, and friends across Canada to make a blood or plasma donation this year. Our CWL parish team name is “St. Albert the Great Catholic Women’s League” through www.blood.ca if you wish to join our team. Our team has made 6 donations so far! There are several donation sites across the city that change based on site availability. The Acadia Recreation Complex and Southview Church in Walden are currently the closest sites to our Parish.
Thank you for your continued support!

Unlocking Hope: Highlights from the International Interfaith Symposium in Health Care
Read this press release announcing the release of a video titled "Unlocking Hope: Highlights from the International Interfaith Symposium on Palliative Care." Taking place from May 21 to May 23, 2024, in Toronto, the symposium gathered leaders, experts, and advocates from diverse backgrounds, including Bishop McGrattan, to explore the vital role of palliative care in fostering compassion and dignity through serious illness and at the end of life. Through engaging presentations, panel discussions, and collaborative workshops, participants worked towards shaping a narrative of hope and understanding in palliative care that transcends cultural and religious boundaries. This video demonstrates the profound discussions and shared aspirations that emerged from the recent symposium organized by the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops and the Pontifical Academy for Life, along with other key partners, in Toronto, 21-23 May 2024.

40 Hours Devotion for Vocations
"Getting up in the middle of the night and driving to Adoration for 3 am was an amazing experience. While meditating on the actual presence of Christ right before my eyes, I was struck by how more acute and aware my senses and attention were at this dark hour," shares one parishioner during the 40 Hours Devotion for Vocations. The response to this initiative has indeed been extraordinary. Over the last month and a half, more than a thousand parishioners have come to adore Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and pray for vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.

Sunday Bulletin shorts
This Last Supper account in Mark serves to interpret the death of Jesus through a well-accomplished interplay of predictions and events. The detail that preparations for this meal were made “on the first day of Unleavened Bread,” when the Passover lamb is sacrificed, heightens the impact of the sacrificial language that Jesus uses of himself at the table. The heart of the passage are the words of Jesus from which are derived the four main Eucharistic actions – taking, blessing, breaking and sharing. - What elements of our celebration of Eucharist are recognizable in this passage?
- In your own understanding, is the Eucharist a thing/object (i.e. the host) or an action, or much more than that – namely the true Presence of a Person? How have you come to this understanding? Has it grown and changed?
- How has your own life been taken, blessed, broken and shared as a Eucharistic child of God
