25th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Isaiah 55: 6 - 9 Philippians 1: 20C - 24, 27A Matthew 20: 1 - 16A
|
Though we can never fully grasp the infinite perfection of God and His ways, a basic knowledge of Scripture reveals that God’s logic often differs from worldly logic.
Our first reading, from Isaiah, reminds us that God often thinks bigger than we do. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above your ways and my thoughts above your thoughts.” As His followers we must strive as best we can to think as God does, using our time (and our talents and treasure, too) with eternity in mind.
In our Gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus offers us a glimpse of the “Godly logic” of the Father through a parable of a landowner hiring workers for his vineyard. Some workers are called early in the day, others not until very late. Yet the landowner pays them all a full day’s wage. This angered the laborers who had worked longest. But those laborers were relying on human logic and human calculations. They were not thinking as God does.
This can happen to us Christian stewards as well. We can grumble and complain (at least internally) when we compare ourselves to others and sense that not everyone is contributing as much as we are to the parish, the neighborhood, within our family and so on. At those moments, we need to think bigger!
We must remember that it is a great privilege to have been called by the Father to work in His vineyard. Living the stewardship way of life brings us meaning, depth and purpose.
Let’s embrace this Godly thinking and thank Him for calling us to this way of life.

IMPORTANT DONATION INFORMATION
ELECTRONIC FUNDS TRANSFERS – when making donations by Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) please put your full name in the memo line, and your address if it is the first time you are sending an EFT donation. We are receiving donations that only come in from the bank with a first name, and we do not know who it belongs to, or what it is for; donation, sacrament fee payment, etc. Also, you may have the same first and last name as another parishioner, and the address helps us correctly record the donation. Your full name and address ensures that we are recording the donation to the correct person for tax receipts at the end of the year.
DONATION ENVELOPES – we are encouraging parishioners to make donations electronically, however we can provide you with a box of donation envelopes and a sheet of labels to put on them, as the envelopes are not numbered. Please come to the parish office Monday through Friday 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, and we can provide you with the box of envelopes and labels. If you do not want the labels, when using envelopes, please PRINT your full name and address on the envelope. If you only put your first name “John”, or your last name “Doe Family”, we do not know who to record the donation to and it gets recorded as loose.

SOCIETY OF ST VINCENT DE PAUL
September 27 is the Feast of St Vincent de Paul
An Interesting article by Sister Nina Krapic, VMZ, in Vatican News explains the terrible problems of homelessness and how the global Vincentian family is seeking to house homeless people in various parts of the world." As the number of homeless people continues to rise around the world, members of the Vincentian Family are carrying out a campaign to help give 10 000 people a home by the end of 2024. In Guatemala Vincentians have been taking care of 35 families who lost their houses after a volcanic eruption, as well as in Mexico after an earthquake." These are just two examples of projects being carried out by Vincentians around the world.
As we celebrate the feast of St Vincent de Paul on September 27, we can remember St. Vincent de Paul faced the challenges of homelessness in France in the 1600's. When King Louis Xlll died, he left St. Vincent an inheritance. " With the money St. Vincent bought 13 houses where he housed the street children of Paris.
Calgary is also experiencing an increase in homelessness and food insecurity. We are faced daily with challenges in providing the resources necessary to put people into affordable homes and to put food on their tables. We look to our church leaders, parishioners, schools and community at large to participate in finding ways to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters.
"For those who have no homes, that they may quickly find a place in which they can live a happy and decent life" "Lord hear us". Society of St Vincent de Paul Closing Prayer

PLEASE HELP US TELL THE STORY OF OUR PARISH
A small group of the faithful from St. Albert the Great Parish have taken on the mission to put together some recollections and archives going back to the very beginnings of our parish. Our history got away from us and we think that while we’re still able, we need to gather up our memories. We are reaching out to anyone who has been a part of our journey for the past 25 years to help document our past.
We’re not exactly sure of what this is all going to look like, but all stories and memories are important. Can you help us?
Your participation wouldn’t involve a huge time commitment. If you do like meetings and such, we’ve decided to gather once a month to add past events to a giant timeline. But, another way that you might participate is to write down your recollections…events that stick out in your memory or that were really important to your family. You might want to look through your boxes of photos and contribute those or a scan of those. There are many ways that your participation might be celebrated. Whether you walked in the front doors of our church when they first opened 20 years ago, or for the first time a few months ago, you are an important part of our history and we thank you for anything you might do. If you have something to share, please contact us at archives@stalbertthegreat.ca .

World Day of Migrants & Refugees - Sunday, Sep 24
“Free to choose whether to migrate or to stay” is the theme chosen by the Holy Father for the 109th World Day of Migrants and Refugees on September 24, 2023. Pope Francis intends to promote a renewed reflection on a right that has not yet been codified at the international level: the right not to have to migrate or, in other words, the right to be able to remain in one’s own land. - Read the Pope's message for 2023 for World Day of Migrants and Refugees

Pope's Prayer Intention for September
Pope Francis always encourages us to place ourselves at the side of those who are marginalized and cast out, those who never make the headlines. In the video containing the prayer intention for September, he asks us a question that should not leave us indifferent. “How is it that we allow the ‘throwaway culture’ – in which millions of men and women are worth nothing compared to economic goods – to dominate our lives, our cities, our way of life? And continuing on, he pleads with us: “Let’s stop making invisible those who are on the margins of society, whether it’s due to poverty, addictions, mental illness or disability.” Let us listen carefully to his message and do what we can to substitute the “throwaway culture” with a “culture of welcoming.” - Pope's prayer intention for September: "Let us pray for those people on the margins of society in subhuman living conditions, that they may not be neglected by institutions and never be cast out."

Sunday Bulletin shorts What is a parable and what does it do? “A parable is a concise story that is drawn from life, which when told to a particular audience, makes one point that challenges accepted views.” All of these elements are present in the story Jesus tells. What is the kingdom of heaven like? That is the basic question one must ask and the entire passage today provides the answer. The central point of the parable is not on the wages paid to each group but on the owner. He is generous and it is God’s generosity that is the basic issue. - What is your reaction to this parable? Why?
- How does this parable connect to the first reading?

Resources for children Kid's challenge this week: Jesus tells us that the last will be first and the first will be last. He teaches us that God loves and values each one of us. He gives us his love freely and generously. When we spend our time thinking that we deserve more that we have, it’s as though we have our hands on our heads, blocking some of our vision. We cannot see and appreciate the wonderful gifts God gives us. We miss out on having a grateful, generous heart. Let’s all take time this week to notice and be grateful for the many gifts God has given us.
