Acts 1:1-11 Ephesians 1:17-23 Matthew 28:16-20
|
Today, we celebrate the great feast of the Ascension of our Lord, that glorious moment when Jesus, 40 days after His resurrection, was lifted up — quite literally— into heaven, as the apostles watched in stunned amazement. It is recounted in both our first reading, from Acts, as well as the Gospel passage, from Matthew. It must have been an extraordinary thing to witness.
But the first reading tells us that the apostles were not permitted to simply bask in the moment for very long. “While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them. They said, 'Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?'”
In other words, “Don’t just stand there, do something!”
This verse is a call to each one of us Christian stewards this very day. We have been given every grace and blessing through the Mass and all of the sacraments, through the Word of God, the rich teachings of our faith, and even our talents and our material possessions.
And like those first apostles, we are not meant to just stand here but to do something with these gifts — in love and gratitude to the One Who gave them to us. We are called, just as much as the first apostles “to be [His] witnesses… to the ends of the earth,” not with our own power, but through the power of the Holy Spirit in us.

Our parish needs sponsors to accompany those who are on the journey to become Catholic, through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Sponsors offer companionship and prayer that supports the Catechumen or Candidate through the RCIA process. You do not need to be a teacher of the faith, just a fully initiated and practicing Catholic. Many sponsors have said this role has helped them grow in their own faith. The time commitment is to attend some of the weekly Wednesday evening catechesis sessions and ultimately the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil.
Please prayerfully consider this invitation, and if you'd like to find out more contact Greg Yont at rcia@stalbertthegreat.ca. May God bless you!

PLEASE HELP US TELL THE STORY OF OUR PARISH
A small group of the faithful from St. Albert the Great Parish have taken on the mission to put together some recollections and archives going back to the very beginnings of our parish. Our history got away from us and we think that while we’re still able, we need to gather up our memories. We are reaching out to anyone who has been a part of our journey for the past 25 years to help document our past.
We’re not exactly sure of what this is all going to look like, but all stories and memories are important. Can you help us?
Your participation wouldn’t involve a huge time commitment. If you do like meetings and such, we’ve decided to gather once a month to add past events to a giant timeline. But, another way that you might participate is to write down your recollections…events that stick out in your memory or that were really important to your family. You might want to look through your boxes of photos and contribute those or a scan of those. There are many ways that your participation might be celebrated. Whether you walked in the front doors of our church when they first opened 20 years ago, or for the first time a few months ago, you are an important part of our history and we thank you for anything you might do. If you have something to share, please contact us at archives@stalbertthegreat.ca .

POPE'S PRAYER INTENTION FOR MAY 2023
Pope Francis has just reminded us of something very important: that ecclesial movements should always keep moving forward. They should keep responding to the changes and challenges of today's world. These movements, with their unique calling, continue to inspire many lay people to live out the Gospel in their daily lives, spreading the Good News everywhere they go. Let's join Pope Francis in praying for this important intention as we look forward to the Feast of Pentecost. And just like John Paul II, let's call upon the Holy Spirit to come and make our unique gifts and talents even more fruitful as we share our faith with the world. Pope's prayer intention for May 2023: Let us pray that ecclesial movements and groups may daily rediscover their mission, an evangelizing mission, and that they place their own charisms at the service of the world’s needs

Catholic Education & the Provincial Election
A message from the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD): Calgary, Chestermere, Airdrie, and Cochrane. The Calgary Catholic Board of Trustees are advocates for Catholic education. We believe that all of our students deserve the best learning opportunities so that they can reach their full potential and be healthy, successful learners in faith-filled spaces. Together, our board works hard to provide leadership and direction to our school district and to shine light on the value and importance of publicly funded Catholic education. Calgary Catholic is one of the most successful school districts in the province and we work to provide the highest-quality programs that educate and empower students from kindergarten to Grade 12. We are also seeing rapid growth. Families want quality, faith-based Catholic education, which is why our board has developed an advocacy booklet that summarizes the district's priorities and shines light on the areas in which our schools require additional support. Through ongoing advocacy efforts, our Board is hopeful that our school district will receive sustainable and equitable funding that will in turn allow us to support all of our students' diverse needs in quality, faith-based learning spaces. The next provincial election is scheduled for May 29, 2023. Feel free to use the questions and information in the advocacy booklet when speaking to MLA candidates in your area. For more information, please visit our website.”
