STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

On this sixth Sunday of Easter, our readings remind us that God must come first in our lives, and that love of God shows itself in concrete actions — this is precisely why the stewardship way of life is so necessary.

Our second reading, from St. Peter, challenges us to,  “Sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts.”  In other words, we are to put Christ first above all else in our lives.  His role is not merely as Savior of our lives, as significant as that role is — He is to be “Lord” of our lives as well.  As His disciples, we are called to make Him ruler of all aspects of our lives — our time, talent, and treasure.

The beauty of the stewardship way of life is that it offers us a concrete means to show that Christ truly is Lord of our lives, to “prove” our love, in a manner of speaking, because true love is not a mere sentiment.  “Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me,” Jesus tells us in our Gospel passage from John.

True love is an act of the will. It requires obedience to all of God’s commandments. This requires courage, humility, and deep trust in Him.

But the rewards of this kind of love are indescribably wonderful. Christ tells us Himself,  “Whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him.”

Could there be anything more satisfying to live in such a way that the God of the universe is pleased to reveal more and more of Himself to us?

PLEASE HELP US TELL THE STORY OF OUR PARISH

A small group of the faithful from St. Albert the Great Parish have taken on the mission to put together some recollections and archives going back to the very beginnings of our parish.  Our history got away from us and we think that while we’re still able, we need to gather up our memories.  We are reaching out to anyone who has been a part of our journey for the past 25 years to help document our past.

We’re not exactly sure of what this is all going to look like, but all stories and memories are important.  Can you help us?

Your participation wouldn’t involve a huge time commitment.  If you do like meetings and such, we’ve decided to gather once a month to add past events to a giant timeline.  But, another way that you might participate is to write down your recollections…events that stick out in your memory or that were really important to your family.  You might want to look through your boxes of photos and contribute those or a scan of those.  There are many ways that your participation might be celebrated.  Whether you walked in the front doors of our church when they first opened 20 years ago, or for the first time a few months ago, you are an important part of our history and we thank you for anything you might do.  If you have something to share, please contact us at  archives@stalb...  .

A message from Bishop McGrattan

Together with the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), Bishop McGrattan is urging the faithful to continue to oppose the expansion of MAiD in Canada. The CCCB has just issued an Open Letter to the Government of Canada and a Message to the Catholic Faithful on May 9 re: Permitting Persons Living with Mental Illness to Access Euthanasia/Assisted Suicide. We ask you to share the Bishop's message and provide your parishioners with access to the CCCB letters below.

POPE'S PRAYER INTENTION FOR MAY 2023

Pope Francis has just reminded us of something very important: that ecclesial movements should always keep moving forward.  They should keep responding to the changes and challenges of today's world.  These movements, with their unique calling, continue to inspire many lay people to live out the Gospel in their daily lives, spreading the Good News everywhere they go. Let's join Pope Francis in praying for this important intention as we look forward to the Feast of Pentecost.  And just like John Paul II, let's call upon the Holy Spirit to come and make our unique gifts and talents even more fruitful as we share our faith with the world.

Pope's prayer intention for May 2023: Let us pray that ecclesial movements and groups may daily rediscover their mission, an evangelizing mission, and that they place their own charisms at the service of the world’s needs

Catholic Education & the Provincial Election

A message from the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD): Calgary, Chestermere, Airdrie, and Cochrane.

The Calgary Catholic Board of Trustees are advocates for Catholic education.  We believe that all of our students deserve the best learning opportunities so that they can reach their full potential and be healthy, successful learners in faith-filled spaces. Together, our board works hard to provide leadership and direction to our school district and to shine light on the value and importance of publicly funded Catholic education.

Calgary Catholic is one of the most successful school districts in the province and we work to provide the highest-quality programs that educate and empower students from kindergarten to Grade 12.  We are also seeing rapid growth.  Families want quality, faith-based Catholic education, which is why our board has developed an advocacy booklet  that summarizes the district's priorities and shines light on the areas in which our schools require additional support.

Through ongoing advocacy efforts, our Board is hopeful that our school district will receive sustainable and equitable funding that will in turn allow us to support all of our students' diverse needs in quality, faith-based learning spaces.  The next provincial election is scheduled for May 29, 2023.  Feel free to use the questions and information in the advocacy booklet when speaking to MLA candidates in your area.  For more information, please visit our  website...

Sunday Bulletin shorts, free to use

In typical John-style we hear from the mouth of Jesus the basic building blocks of his true identity, of his life and ministry, and of Christian truth and theology: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”  As Jesus takes leave from his disciples and they ask where he is going, he stresses once again who he is – I AM.  Jesus’ words are to encourage all disciples to continue believing the God of life.

  1. What part of this reading speaks to you most strongly today?
  2. How do Jesus’ words console you, challenge you, send you forth?
  3. In what way does faith in Jesus help you grow a big heart?

  • Kid's challenge this week: It is often easy to show our love for those people who are close to us.  We can be kind and generous to our friends, we can listen to our parents, carers and teachers.  We can share with our brother or sister.  But we need to do our best to show our love to all people, not just those who are close by.  How do you think we can show our love for our sisters and brothers around the world?
