The
Christian steward approaches life with an “Easter vision” rooted in
gratitude for the salvation our Lord has won for us through His death
and Resurrection. Today’s readings on this Divine Mercy Sunday
teach us how this approach plays out in daily life and remind us that
we can have complete trust in the mercy of God to lead us, step by
step, to heaven.
Certainly, it is challenging to live for heaven when the things of
the earth — job stress, family crises, health troubles, political
strife — loom large on the horizon. We can find ourselves
becoming cynical like the Apostle, Thomas, in our Gospel passage
today — until he had an encounter with the merciful Savior. We
all recall the famous line from Thomas, who was not present with the
other Apostles during Jesus’ first appearance after the
Resurrection. Beaten down by the events of the last several
days, Thomas refuses to believe that the others had indeed “seen the
Lord” as they claimed.
Thomas stubbornly declares he would not believe their story about the
Lord unless he placed his finger into the nail marks and his hand
into His side. Yet, these doubts did not repel our Lord. They
actually drew Him to Thomas in an extraordinary way. Our merciful
Lord saw that beneath the hubris in Thomas’ statement were pain and
disappointment. Our Lord is mercy itself. And so He did
not condemn Thomas, but calmed his doubts and fears, and allowed
Thomas to actually touch those Sacred Wounds.
What amazing grace.
When we are tempted to give in to doubts about our faith for whatever
reason, all we need to do is seek the Lord — in prayer, in the
sacraments, through the encouragement of our Christian communities —
and just as He did for Thomas, our Lord will mercifully restore our
Easter vision and fill us with His joy and peace.

PLEASE HELP US TELL THE STORY OF OUR
PARISH
A
small group of the faithful from St. Albert the Great Parish have
taken on the mission to put together some recollections and archives
going back to the very beginnings of our parish. Our history
got away from us and we think that while we’re still able, we need to
gather up our memories. We are reaching out to anyone who has
been a part of our journey for the past 25 years to help document our
past.
We’re
not exactly sure of what this is all going to look like, but all
stories and memories are important. Can you help us?
Your
participation wouldn’t involve a huge time commitment. If you
do like meetings and such, we’ve decided to gather once a month to
add past events to a giant timeline. But, another way that you
might participate is to write down your recollections…events that
stick out in your memory or that were really important to your
family. You might want to look through your boxes of photos and
contribute those or a scan of those. There are many ways that
your participation might be celebrated. Whether you walked in
the front doors of our church when they first opened 20 years ago, or
for the first time a few months ago, you are an important part of our
history and we thank you for anything you might do. If you have
something to share, please contact us at archives@stalb...

Sunday
Bulletin shorts, free to use
We
might find it difficult to believe that faith was no easier for the
first disciples than it is for us today over 2,000 years later.
John describes a community united not by faith, but by fear.
Ever since Jesus first said “Peace be with you,” we have
continued to need those reassuring words to combat our own fears.
This phrase is still part of our liturgy for this reason.
Thomas reminds us that doubt is not the enemy of faith, but
fear is. He also illustrates our human need for touch, for
physical encounter – a need met profoundly in the celebration of our
sacraments.
- What kind of “hard evidence” have you ever
needed to keep on believing?
- This Sunday was designated as Divine Mercy
Sunday by Saint Pope John Paul II, who along with Pope John
XXIII was canonized in April 2014. Divine Mercy is also a
devotion that was shared with the world by Saint Faustina
Kowalska (1905-1938), a young Polish nun. The Divine Mercy
message is one of trusting in Jesus and in the unbounding mercy
of God. What does this message of mercy mean in our lives,
our parishes and the world?
- Thomas has been known as the doubter, but he
acclaims Jesus in the most exalted words. Do you ever use
Thomas’ words: “My Lord and My God”?
(Source: Diocese of Saskatoon)
- Kid's
challenge this week: After
Jesus died on the Cross, his disciples locked themselves away.
They were afraid they might die too. When we are feeling
afraid or uncertain, we can remember Jesus’ gift of peace and
pray to ask Jesus to help us feel peaceful. We might close
our eyes, take a few breaths, and imagine Jesus saying to us,
“Peace be with you.” Let’s take a few moments and be with
Jesus in the quiet of our hearts and receive his gift of peace.
Ask your family to pray with you, so that your faith in
Jesus will be strong. (Loyola Press)
