4th SUNDAY OF LENT

1st Reading: 1 Samuel 16.1b, 6-7, 10-13
2nd Reading: Ephesians 5.8-14
Gospel: John 9.1-41 (longer) or John 9.1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38 (shorter)

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

Today’s readings on this fourth Sunday of Lent are filled with contrasting images — God’s vision versus human vision, the light of Christ versus the darkness of sin, spiritual blindness versus spiritual sightedness.  Embracing a stewardship way of life can free us from spiritual blindness, allow us to see as God sees, and help us to reflect the light of Christ’s love in the way we live our daily lives.

Our Second Reading, from Ephesians, begins, “… You were once in darkness but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”  Because of our Baptism, we have the “light” of the Blessed Trinity dwelling within us.  In the difficulties and messiness of daily life, it’s easy to forget this glorious truth about ourselves.  It can also be difficult to determine whether we truly are living in a way that reflects Christ’s light.

The stewardship way of life, with its emphasis on the rightly ordered use of the gifts of time, talent, and treasure, gives us a guide we can consult on a daily basis to help ensure that we really are living as “children of the light.”

In our Gospel passage from John, Christ restores sight to a man born blind. The man says that Christ “opened my eyes.”  These Lenten days are an excellent time for us to ask Jesus to open our eyes, too.  Let us ask Him to show us where we may be suffering from spiritual blindness, perhaps even in subtle ways in our use — or misuse — of time, talent, and treasure.

As we continue on our Lenten journey, let’s intensify our efforts in any of these areas where we have become a little blinded so that by Easter, we are truly living as children of the light.

PLEASE HELP US TELL THE STORY OF OUR PARISH

A small group of the faithful from St. Albert the Great Parish have taken on the mission to put together some recollections and archives going back to the very beginnings of our parish.  Our history got away from us and we think that while we’re still able, we need to gather up our memories.  We are reaching out to anyone who has been a part of our journey for the past 25 years to help document our past.

We’re not exactly sure of what this is all going to look like, but all stories and memories are important.  Can you help us?

Your participation wouldn’t involve a huge time commitment.  If you do like meetings and such, we’ve decided to gather once a month to add past events to a giant timeline.  But, another way that you might participate is to write down your recollections…events that stick out in your memory or that were really important to your family.  You might want to look through your boxes of photos and contribute those or a scan of those.  There are many ways that your participation might be celebrated.  Whether you walked in the front doors of our church when they first opened 20 years ago, or for the first time a few months ago, you are an important part of our history and we thank you for anything you might do.  If you have something to share, please contact us at  archives@stalb...  .

Sunday Bulletin shorts

The story of the man born blind is artfully told in an imaginative way, exploring the relationship between faith, knowledge, sin and vision.  Even though the healing of the blind man is the central physical change, the moral and theological reality of sin is equally important in this gospel account.  The disciples’ first question, “Who sinned?” and Christ’s answer are provocative still today.  The Pharisees are so threatened by Jesus’ action – an action that explodes their neat traditional categories – that they resort to meaningless nit-picking.

- What sentence or phrase in the gospel speaks to you?

- Has there been a time when you “saw” Jesus clearly, perhaps in a person, a news story or an ordinary event in your life?  Explain.

- Has your own stubbornness or unwillingness to see another’s point of view ever caused hurt or division?

- We all have blind spots in matters of justice and charity. They affect the way we see things in family life, work, etc. What will help us to improve our vision, in order to “truly see” ?

Resources for children

Kid's challenge this week:  We hear how Jesus helped a blind man to see again. God has given us the gift of sight to see all the wonderful things that he has made in our world.  But we also need to open our eyes to see things that are damaging the world, and our planet.  Let's think of one way you can try to make a difference, to care for our earth and to help people who are poor to change their lives for the better.

On His pilgrimage to Canada in July of 2022, the Holy Father engaged with the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples in a very direct and intimate manner, offering his apology and learning from each encounter.  Bishop McGrattan was instrumental in the preparations for the visit and accompanied the Holy Father during his time in our country. He has distilled his own reflections into ten key messages which he will present and discuss with us.  Please join us at St. Peter's Parish, 541 Silvergrove Drive NW, Calgary on Saturday, April 15th as we walk together on the journey of healing, truth-telling and reconciliation.  Bishop McGrattan will celebrate the 8:30 am Mass, followed by his presentation.
