As we
begin the beautiful and challenging season of Lent, our readings this
week remind us why we need these 40 days so much. They also
suggest a particular strategy we Christian stewards might take as we
make the journey toward Easter.
Our first reading takes us all the way back to Genesis, reminding us
of our Creator and the loving care and lavish gifts He gave to our
ancestors, Adam and Eve. He created them out of pure love and
provided abundantly for them.
Life was good in the Garden! Until the first couple allowed just a
sliver of doubt in the goodness of God to enter their minds.
Swayed by the words of the serpent, they became ungrateful and
distrustful despite God’s great love for them and all the gifts of
creation He had provided. Sound familiar? These are the
same temptations that threaten to pull us away from God today.
Our Gospel passage from Matthew shows us by the example of Jesus
Himself one way that we can attain spiritual strength and grow to
become more effective disciples and stewards. In this passage, we
find our Lord in the desert, fasting for 40 days and 40 nights.
Like Adam and Eve, He is confronted by the evil one. But unlike
our fallen parents, our Lord triumphs definitively over the devil’s
lies and sends him slithering away.
How did He do it? By knowing the Scriptures and by proclaiming
them confidently. And by His perfect trust in the Father.
This Lent, let us embrace this 40-day spiritual reset. Let us
prioritize our use of time by committing to prayerful study of the
Scriptures and trusting more deeply in the Father’s love. We
will surely be better stewards by Easter.

Albert the Great CWL is excited to announce that we will be
organizing a Baby Bottle Lenten project this year using the baby

The

partnered to create a program exclusive for baby supplies such as
diapers, formula etc, Kara program's St. Annes Pantry - assisting
pregnant and parenting female and male students and other CWL
supported charities that we participate in. We look forward to
seeing you this weekend and let the fun, learning and spiritual
growth commence in such a family orientated Lenten activity.

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION FOR ADULTS
Are
you an adult Catholic but never had the opportunity to celebrate the
sacrament of Confirmation? Please register for the sacrament of
Confirmation for adults:
We
are offering adult candidates preparation sessions, through the month
of March, for the sacrament of Confirmation (which will take place at
the end of April with Bishop McGrattan).
Please be aware: if divorced and
remarried, or married outside the Church (in a civil marriage or
married in another Christian denomination), the process of annulment
or convalidation (sometimes referred to as having a marriage
“blessed” in the Church) prior to the reception of Confirmation may
be required. In some cases, this could delay the Confirmation
for the candidate as necessary.

LENTEN RETREAT AT SATG: INTO THE
DEEP - FINDING PEACE THROUGH PRAYER

Are
you searching for peace?
God
promises that when we draw near to Him that He will draw near to
us. The way to draw near is through prayer. That is the
path to peace.
What
is prayer, exactly? What sets authentic Christian prayer apart
from the many “spiritual” practices being promoted today? How
does one pray? Is it really necessary? These
questions—and many more—will be answered at our retreat day.
Spiritual
directors Elizabeth Sanesh and Michelle Diment, together with the
Come As You Are team, will be hosting the retreat using a professionally
produced video series featuring the founder of the Avila Institute
and former president of EWTN, Dan Burke! There will also be
small group discussions and time for Q&A.
This Lenten retreat day takes place
on Saturday March 18th from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in the parish hall.
Cost is $10 per person and includes the book Into the Deep:
Finding Peace Through Prayer by Dan Burke. Coffee/Tea provided.
Please bring a bag lunch.

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE: A MOVEMENT OF
SOLIDARITY
Established
in 1967, Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada is the official
international solidarity organization of the Catholic Church in
Canada.
We partner with organizations in the Global South that promote
alternatives to unjust social, political and economic structures and
support women in their quest for equality and justice.
With the help of our 11,000+ volunteer members, we inform Canadians
about the root causes of impoverishment and mobilize them to act for
change. Our Lenten campaign, Stand for the Land focuses on
people’s defence of their territories in Colombia and Honduras.

Both
Luke and Matthew write a detailed account of Jesus being tempted in
the desert right after the “high point” of Jesus’ baptism in the
Jordan. It is not accidental that each temptation occurs in a
special place: the desert, the temple, and the mountain. The
Bible tells us that each of these places pulsates with the possibility
of encountering God there. One by one, Jesus needs to make
clear choices as to what kind of Messiah God intends him to be.
This passage also has both Satan and Jesus quoting Scripture, thereby
illustrating that knowing Scripture is not enough – it must be
properly interpreted and lived out.
- Who or what helps you to be true to your
faith and to Jesus Christ our saviour?
- Have you ever faced temptations in the
process of clarifying your God-given mission?
- What temptations in your life most challenge
your faith commitment to Jesus?
(Source: Diocese of Saskatoon)
Kid's challenge this week: After Jesus spent time in the desert he was
hungry. Then Jesus had to make some choices. First, he
had the choice to either rely on God or turn stones into bread.
Even though he was very hungry, Jesus chose to trust in God. We
can also choose not to do something we know is wrong, even if we
really want to. It takes a lot of strength to make the right
choices. This Lent, let’s think about how we can make good
choices – just like Jesus did in the desert – even when we find it
hard. (CAFOD)
