“So
be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Talk
about setting the bar high!
This verse at the end of today’s Gospel passage from Matthew sets the
tone for all of the readings this week.
The stewardship way of life, giving away the best of our time,
talents and treasure to God for His glory and for the sake of others,
is the path to holiness. Yet, it appears utterly foolish in the
eyes of many.
Our Lord gives us several illustrations today of this “foolish”
concept: “When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the
other one as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over
your tunic, hand over your cloak as well... love your enemies and
pray for those who persecute you.” This is the kind of action
and attitude that will make us “children of our heavenly Father.”
This is the high bar of holiness to which our Lord is calling
us.
If your lifestyle and your priorities look a little foolish to the
world around you, know that you’re probably doing it right in God’s
eyes. At the same time, you will be filled with a peace that
the world around you desperately needs. And your stewardship
way of life may just draw those around to the heavenly Father and a
life of holiness, too.
So, with God’s grace, we can confidently press on in the stewardship
way of life, aiming to be perfect as our heavenly Father is
perfect. Our all-holy God desires it and deserves nothing less.

CONNECT NIGHT: YOUR LENTEN GPS (GOD
POSITIONING SYSTEM)
As we
enter the holy season of Lent, you might be wondering, "How is
God calling me to grow in holiness this Lent? Do I give up
chocolate?" Perhaps He is calling you to go deeper.
At this month's Connect night, we will show you a simple and
effective way to make this Lent a fruitful season of spiritual
growth: a navigation plan. We wouldn't think about taking an
important trip without a roadmap of some sort, and it is the same in
the spiritual life. We'll talk about why and how a concrete
Lenten plan, or "Plan of Love" can help you grow in your
relationship with God.
WHEN: Thursday, February 23rd, 2023 from 7 - 9 PM
WHERE:
St. Albert the Great Church Basement
Meet others in small group discussions and enjoy the social
afterward. Come as you are! All are welcome.

CONFIRMATION PREPARATION FOR ADULTS
Are
you an adult Catholic but never had the opportunity to celebrate the
sacrament of Confirmation? Please register for the sacrament of
Confirmation for adults:
We
are offering adult candidates preparation sessions, through the month
of March, for the sacrament of Confirmation (which will take place at
the end of April with Bishop McGrattan).
Please be aware: if divorced and
remarried, or married outside the Church (in a civil marriage or
married in another Christian denomination), the process of annulment
or convalidation (sometimes referred to as having a marriage
“blessed” in the Church) prior to the reception of Confirmation may
be required. In some cases, this could delay the Confirmation
for the candidate as necessary.

ST. MARY'S UNIVERSITY BOOK SALE

|
|
|
|

|
The
beautiful and challenging “Sermon on the Mount” continues with words
from Jesus that present a radical call to love, forgiveness and
non-violence. His words echo the first reading’s call to “love
your neighbour,” with Jesus offering powerful, counter-cultural
examples. While legalistic eye-for-eye justice seems fair to
us, Jesus calls for a new way of responding, a new way of living, a
much more radical and loving response. Turning the other cheek,
giving more than we are sued for, lending to all who ask, and loving
our enemies – this is how we are called to imitate our perfect,
loving God.
- Is it possible to respond in the loving way
that Jesus is demanding? Can you recall examples of those
who have lived this call?
- Judgment and revenge seem natural responses
to being hurt. What can help us to instead offer peace and
goodness?
- Has a loving response in the face of
difficulty ever made a difference in your own life? Has
God’s generous love ever moved you to love an enemy?
(Source: Diocese of Saskatoon)
Kid's challenge this week: Jesus knows that we are human and cannot always be
perfect. He does not expect us to know how to do everything
correctly all the time. But Jesus does expect us to serve the Kingdom
of God by following his example of loving others, including our
enemies, and being generous to those who need help. This week, ask
the Holy Spirit to help you be generous and love others as Jesus
did. (Source: Loyola Press)
Ash
Wednesday Mass with Bishop McGrattan | Feb 22
Bishop
McGrattan will celebrate the Ash Wednesay Mass on Feb. 22 at 5 pm,
St. Mary's Cathedral. All are welcome.
Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday are universal days of fasting and
abstinence from meat. Anyone over the age of 18 and under the
age of 59 are obliged to fast and abstain. Fasting, in the
Latin Church, is the limitation of food and drink – typically to one
main meal and two smaller meals (that together do not equal the
regular meal in size), with no solid foods in between.
Abstinence is the refraining from certain kinds of food or drink,
typically meat. While all Fridays are days of abstinence from
meat, in Canada “Catholics may substitute special acts of charity or
piety on this day.” ~ Ordo, note 29b and 29d.
