As
our celebration of Christmas continues, today we observe the great
feast of The Epiphany of the Lord. The word “epiphany” comes
from Greek and means manifestation or appearance. The
stewardship way of life is one in which we live in grateful response to
God’s countless manifestations in our lives.
Our Gospel passage, from Matthew, has much to teach us
about stewardship, through the actions of the magi.
As good stewards, the magi were watching for manifestations of God’s
presence in their lives. “We have seen the star at its rising,”
they say. Good stewards are keenly aware of the “star” of God’s
presence and His gifts in their lives. It is this awareness
that fills them with gratitude and the desire to both worship God and
share His gifts with others.
The magi, upon seeing the manifestation of God’s presence in their
lives, “were overjoyed.” Good stewards, who live with the
awareness of God’s presence and gifts to them, simply can’t help but
be filled with joy. Not necessarily the fleeting and superficial
kind of joy the world promises through wealth or power, but rather
the deep, unalterable joy only God can give.
Finally, the magi were so filled with awe upon encountering the
newborn Jesus, they prostrated themselves before him and “opened
their treasures and offered him gifts.” This is precisely why
good stewards generously share their material gifts — as a loving act
of worship to an extravagantly loving God.
Let us rejoice in God’s manifestations in our lives and be watchful
for the new ways He is calling us to share ourselves and our gifts in
gratitude to our King in the year ahead.

Epiphany
means “manifestation”, that moment when we suddenly understand
something that previously was hidden from us. Christmas is
about the Incarnation, the coming down of the Son of God to become
human, one of us. Epiphany is the showing of the Christ Child’s
divinity, which is beginning to manifest itself in the world.
- Blessing of Homes
The tradition of blessing doorways on Epiphany is inspired by
the three Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, who followed
the star to a manger in Bethlehem where the Messiah was made
manifest for them in the person of a newborn child. The
Magi showed great hospitality when they came to honour the
Messiah.

Bishop's
Pastoral Letter on the Horizons of Hope
Bishop
McGrattan releases a pastoral letter for the faithful on the Horizons of Hope: A
toolkit for Catholic Parishes on Palliative Care. This
toolkit was developed by the CCCB as a positive response to the end
of life issues and is a meaningful resource for Catholics.
In
the letter, the Bishop explains how Horizons of Hope will create
opportunities for learning and reflections upon end-of-life issues
and to promote the need for excellent palliative care. It will
assist in clarifying misinformation, and reverse the deceptive
messaging found in this increasing culture of death.
All the faithful are invited to take part in the 4-module
program being offered in January 2023.
- Monday,
Jan. 9 (7 to 9 pm) | Module
1: Understanding
the Human Experience of Dying and Death
- Monday,
Jan. 16 (7 to 9 pm) | Module
2: Discerning and Making Decisions at the End of Life
- Monday,
Jan. 23 (7 to 9 pm) | Module
3: Accompanying Those at the End of Life
- Monday,
Jan. 30 (7 to 9 pm) | Module
4: Supporting and Integrating Within the Wider Community
- The powers of light and of darkness, the
energy for good found in dreams and the brute power of
oppression and force, an open universal perspective and a closed
defensive and self-serving isolation -- all these are clearly
contrasted in today's reading.
- What, in the wise men's experience,
communicated there was something special about this birth?
- How did God's revelation to the wise men
challenge the assumptions of Jewish beliefs?
In
your experience, how do “insiders” (i.e. those inside the church)
display Herod-like characteristics and how do “outsiders” display
openness and faith in God?
(Source:
Diocese of Saskatoon)
- Kid's
challenge this week: Like the wise men,
we can give Jesus our best treasure: ourselves! If we
decide to live our lives for Jesus then we will show the love of
Jesus by our love for others. (The Kid's Bulletin)
