STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

It is Christmas! Our Gospel reading on this festive holy day is the opening words of the Gospel of John.  St. John says, “The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.  He was in the world, and the world came to be through him.”  That is why we celebrate today.  Pope Francis opened his sermon on Christmas day last year by saying this: “In the darkness, a light shines.  An angel appears, the glory of the Lord shines around the shepherds and finally the message awaited for centuries is heard.”

At Mass on Christmas Eve we hear, “I proclaim to you good news of great joy; today a Savior is born for us, Christ the Lord.”  It is this joy we need to feel, this joy we need to carry to others.  Many have expressed the joy of today.  Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI once said this about Christmas: “Joy is the true gift of Christmas.  We can communicate this joy simply: with a smile, a kind gesture, a little help, forgiveness.  And the joy we give will certainly come back to us… Let us pray that this presence of the liberating joy of God shines forth in our lives.”

The angel Gabriel greeted our Blessed Mother Mary with the Greek word, Kaire!  That means “Be joyful.”  God is near us today; He is so near that He became a child.  Let us take that joy and share it with others; let us take that joy and change our lives and the lives of others.  When we say “Merry Christmas” let us mean it with every fabric of our being.

Madly in love!  Committed!  Through thick and thin!  For better or for worse! Growing strong marriages takes a supportive village.  That's why St. Albert the Great Parish is launching a monthly Catholic Date Night in the New Year.   We want to encourage and support married couples to take intentional time to focus on their relationship.

A Core Planning Team of several married couples - of all ages - is needed.  Could that be you & your spouse?  If you enjoy event planning and organization, AND have a love for the Sacrament of Marriage, please reach out to Michelle & Tom Diment by email: joyfulnoise9am@gmail.com  for details.

Parish Christmas Masses

Celebrate the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, our Saviour!  Here is the updated list of Christmas Mass times  (Nativity of the Lord & Solemnity of Mary) in the Diocese of Calgary.  The list is also available on  iamblessed.ca

Sunday Bulletin shorts

Whereas Luke’s infancy narrative features Mary, Matthew’s account of the birth of Christ features Joseph.  Matthew connects Joseph to the Joseph in Genesis (The youngest son of Jacob, chapters 38-50) especially through the occurrence of a dream in which the angel appears.  Joseph is also “from the line of David.”  Joseph is challenged to trust without knowing the outcome of events – that is the essence of faith.

  • What themes or lessons do you draw from this Gospel account?
  • Recall a time when you were challenged to trust without knowing the outcome.
  • How can we be living signs of “God-with-us” in our parish community and in our world?

Bishop's Pastoral Letter on the Horizons of Hope

Bishop McGrattan releases a pastoral letter for the faithful on the Horizons of Hope: A toolkit for Catholic Parishes on Palliative Care.  This toolkit was developed by the CCCB as a positive response to the end of life issues and is a meaningful resource for Catholics.

In the letter, the Bishop explains how Horizons of Hope will create opportunities for learning and reflections upon end-of-life issues and to promote the need for excellent palliative care.  It will assist in clarifying misinformation, and reverse the deceptive messaging found in this increasing culture of death.
