STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

In today’s Gospel passage, from Luke, we read the well-known parable of the Good Samaritan.  Here, Jesus teaches us in rich detail what stewardship in action looks like. In fact, this parable could just as accurately be called the parable of the Good Steward.

The first thing we note about the Good Samaritan is that he is aware of the needs of those around him and responds generously.  While the priest and Levi brush right past the man on the side of the road, the Samaritan is watching for those who might be in need.  He has a hospitable way of looking at the world around him and so he is able to “see” in a way that the others did not, and he was “moved with compassion at the sight” of the man.

Next, we see the Good Samaritan spring into action to serve this man, setting aside his own schedule and plans to meet his needs.  He does not just give the man a few dollars or offer quick words of encouragement from across the road.  He goes right up to the man.  He cleans and bandages his wounds.  He puts the man on his own animal and brings him to an inn where he can heal.  He ensures the innkeeper would continue to look after him, and he commits to returning to the man on his way back.

That is how we live out God’s commandments.  That is true hospitality and service. That is how a good steward springs into action when he comes upon a neighbor in need.  And Jesus says to each of us personally, just as He did in today’s Gospel, “Go and do likewise.”

THANK YOU FROM REFUGEE FAMILY MINISTRY

Thank you to all the parishioners that donated to the initial fundraising efforts for a parish refugee family.  We received some new monthly donors as well as many individual donations.

You might enjoy reading this article from one of the previously parish sponsored Iranian refugee families as they are now settling into life in Lethbridge and took a recent trip to Writing on Stone Provincial Park.  In the article, one of the volunteers from All Saints Parish who organized the trip reflected and said "Our Syrian families do cause us to pause and reflect on how fortunate we are to be living in Canada.  It is also wonderful to be welcomed to their family just as we have welcomed them. We are the surrogate family for them in Canada, and it is a lifetime journey of sharing, learning from each other, and supporting them in their everyday life in Canada.  For us, it has been an expansion of our family."

Donations are still needed and can still be made through our parish, completing the refugee family donation form or by submitting an etransfer to donations@stalbertthegreat.ca.  Please clearly indicate the donation is for the "Refugee Family" in the memo line to ensure the funds are directed to this cause. Thank you for your support of this work of charity.

More information about this parish ministry can be found here Refugee Family - St Albert The Great or by emailing satgrefugee@gmail.com.

BAPTISM VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Our clergy could use some assistance with baptisms that take place on Saturday mornings at 10:00am at St. Albert the Great.  We've increased our number of families booked for each celebration (up to 8 families per baptism), and as a result, it would be helpful to have volunteers that would be willing to help setup for the baptism, check families in when they arrive, and assist the priest or deacon as required.

We typically host 3 baptisms per month and we are looking into having a small, rotating team of volunteers.

No experience required!  Whether it is a ministry in which you were involved before or it's something new you would like to check out, contact Dan D'Agostino for more information:
